Addictions can be a good or a bad thing. For example I used to have an addiction to coffee and cigarettes – bad addiction! Then I spun things around, quit smoking with the help of EFT and started a new addiction to water and mediation. Quite the spin! Unfortunately I was very hesitant to release my old habits, but once I finally gained the courage to acknowledge my blocks I knocked them down quickly. Now daily I need my meditation fix for at least 10 minutes and you can find me at any given time gulping down cleansing, beneficial water. The benefits that I have seen from these changes alone would astound you. I went from dragging my sorry ass out of bed in the morning to springing out of bed happily to get my first fix of water, and I rarely wait for the alarm.
BENEFITS OF MEDITATION
This post is really only touching on the awesomeness of meditation, there are many great resources out there and I won’t pretend that I am a mediation master yet. The point I want to illustrate is that I am stepping in the right direction, and so are you by reading this! A few things you will gain by practicing meditation:
- Relax and find it easier to stay calm throughout the day
- Help to allow your body to do it’s thing, improving the productivity of your organs
- Relieve any muscle tension
- Help to beat insomnia
- Reduce anxiety and an entire slew of negative emotions
WHY I RECOMMEND DAILY MEDITATION
Daily meditation is like brushing your teeth. Your energy is effected by those around you, by stress and by your environment. Meditation is a simple way to clean that energy and just like your teeth you want to do it at least once daily. Imagine not brushing your teeth and going out into the world to start your day. Not a great feeling – you likely would not speak confidently or feel your best. Same goes for meditation, your head will feel more clear and your actions will be more deliberate and easy.
WHAT YOU NEED TO MEDITATE
The only thing you truly need for mediation is quiet or headphones. You do not want to be interrupted so do whatever you have to to make it happen. The majority of my meditations are done on my bed or couch with headphones connected to my phone. All ringers and notifications are shut off and my family knows if they want the best version of Mommy – she needs her mediation time. Even my 5 year old respects that.
You don’t need to listen to an audio so if you catch yourself in a quiet, peaceful location simply start breathing deeply and repeat a mantra.
There are a ton of adorable and beautiful things you can add to your meditation time such as essential oils, special cushions, candles and incense but for a beginner they are in no way required.
My absolute favorite is Zen12 meditations and I usually combine it with a mantra. These are 12-20 minutes in length and with 3 kids I really appreciate that! (I am affiliated with them, because I love them so much so I get a portion of the sale if you buy through my link) They get extra bonus points for their white noise meditation which will drown out most anything plus they use brainwave technology to get you into that deep relaxation state quickly. Check out Zen12 here.
I also really love the free chakra meditation by Spiritual Mechanic and do it often.
You can also browse through YouTube and see which meditations resonate with you, there are a ton out there.
CHOOSING A MANTRA
To begin with a mantra is simply a word you repeat over and over again in your mind that creates a vibration and allows you to relax your “monkey mind”. Deepak is the man to listen to about this, and he and Oprah do 21 day meditation challenges that I encourage you to sign up for. Start off by taking a few full, deep breaths that extend into your belly move around and get totally comfortable. Concentrate on each part of your body starting at your toes and release any muscles that are tense. After your body is relaxed begin to repeat your chosen mantra. Here are a few mantras to choose from to get you started:
- OM (likely the one that comes to mind for most)
- PEACE or RELAX (or any word that you want to embody)
- LOVE or HOPE are two of my favorites. Such a lovely feeling!
