When I started my first online business in 2009 I had zero clue where I would end up – I had zero clue that making money from an online business was even a thing. I started following my intuition before I even realized I had intuitive abilities. I started a business when I had no idea that I would actually be good at it.
You see my entire life I’ve believed that I wasn’t particularly good at anything. No skills. No interest or abilities in musical instruments, arts, sports, absolutely terrible at school. Nope I was doomed to figure out a new path for myself and uncover what the f*ck kind of skills were hiding within me.
I came to a point in my life where the pull from within me was stronger than any fear or doubts that were tugging from the other side. I was a stay at home mom with 3 kids, working part time to make ends just barely meet. Yet the thought that this is where I would stay did not enter my mind.
I’m not sure exactly what did it, but I recall commanding at one frustrating point: There has to be another way. I WILL stay at home with my kids. I WILL also make more money than I am now. I WILL find the time to do this and I WILL enjoy myself as I do it – damn it!
Little did I know that determination and forward movement was a skill and one that I held large quantities of.
At the time, with babies on my mind 1000% of the time, I was looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly. I was walking by a bookstore and something caught my eye – I bought a clearance book about ‘going green, started reading it – looked up the author on Facebook, offered to be an intern for her (yes I literally had nothing planned, just followed what I felt like doing.)
Asking her if I could be an intern was my first of many uncomfortable steps that I took along the way, that I brushed off as ‘a no won’t kill me so might as well jump in’
Fast forward a few years and not only was I helping that author and another she referred me to, I had discovered that I could figure out and learn most any skill I needed to succeed in the online world – very easily.
What started off as a helper job for researching and social media turned into me diving headfirst and self teaching myself, among other things:
- How to create a blog, then how to create a website
- How to market, brand, and strategize a business
- How to get publicity and interviews
- How to self publish a book, design a book, do graphic design
Lightbulbs would start to go off in my head, and visions of my own business and how I could legit make money from home started to surface.
By the time I officially opened my virtual assistant company in 2012 I had a wealth of knowledge under my belt but more importantly I had gained massive amounts of self worth and empowerment – figuring out that I was not in fact void of skills – I had the skills of a logical mind that quickly and easily grasped subjects that interested me.
And oh my god – I loved everything to do with online business and marketing.
I know then the key was to stay with services and topics that I WANTED to learn more about and fan the flames of the things that light me up…
So what is the takeaway from this part of my journey?
You do not need to have all the answers – hell you don’t even need any. Just ASK for the change you want, and be willing to notice it. Then when an opportunity presents itself, and it makes you excited and scared but totally into it – take the jump and see where it leads.
